Council employees worked round the clock as they battled the impact of the worst weather to hit Scotland in over 30 years.

Roads teams were out in the worst of the weather, working 24 hours a day in an effort to keep the Falkirk Council area on the road. The priority was gritting major roads across the area, in line with the Council's winter maintenance plans, and road crews worked flat out at full capacity over the holiday period and into January.

Access areas around sheltered housing, care homes, burial grounds, school car parks and the high flats were classed as top priorities. Priority two and three routes were gritted as resources allowed and an ongoing programme to refill grit bins was put in place. In just two weeks, the Council used over 80% of the salt and grit it would normally use in a full year.

Most schools were open as normal throughout, with the few exceptions due to heating faults or burst pipes, and the school meals service kept running despite the weather. Other facilities, such as Bonnybridge Community Centre and the Callendar Park golf course were forced to shut due to problems with buildings or access.

Social Work Services focussed their efforts on making sure their most vulnerable service users were safe and secure and housing staff were called upon to deal with many burst pipes and heating faults.
