More than 1900 tonnes of glass were sent for recycling last year in the Falkirk Council area but we could be doing much better. It's estimated that around 5000 tonnes of glass that could be recycled are still ending up in landfill sites.
There are glass banks at recycling points across the Council area – in every community. To encourage more people to recycle their glass Falkirk Council has designed strong new bags for carrying bottles and jars. Call the recycling helpline 01324 504444 for more information.
Recycled glass can make millions of new bottles and packaging items to a high quality every year helping the environment and business from whisky distillers to jam makers. In fact the sauce bottle in your kitchen cupboard could have been reincarnated many times - last year a jam jar, the year before a wine bottle - and the use of recycled glass in the manufacture of new items greatly reduces energy consumption.
Around 315 kg of carbon dioxide is saved by using recycled glass in the reproduction process, helping reduce harmful greenhouse gases to which Falkirk Council is committed. Recycling glass also reduces the need for raw materials which have to be quarried from the landscape. Every tonne of recycled glass is estimated to preserve 1.3 tonnes of raw materials.
