Libraries Sizzle for Energy Saving Week

There's a new lending service at the library - and it's electric!

There are books, music, DVDs, magazines, wifi internet access and from next week libraries across the Falkirk Council area will also have home energy meters available to borrow for up to four weeks at a time.

These meters donated by Scottish and Southern Energy can measure how much electricity is being used at home and comes complete with an easy to read LED display.

Householders can use them to see how much energy is being used at any time or can add it up over a period to identify energy guzzlers in the home!

Councillor Charles MacDonald, Convener of the Environment and Community Safety Committee said: "Our energy bills are on the rise so there's no better time to launch a project that can help householders monitor and reduce electricity usage.

"The Home Energy Meter project launched next week to mark Energy Saving Week is a welcome addition to our excellent local library services. Householders can borrow these handy meters along with their books and get to grips with the electricity being used in their homes.

"The meters can help households work out how to make the best use of energy and potentially cut their bills."

Home energy meters can be used to:

  • Check how much energy is being used by various items like a washing machine and kettles
  • Check how much energy appliances use when on standby mode
  • Monitor energy use over a period of time.

Energy Saving Week takes place next week 19th - 23rd October. To take part contact your local library and find out when the next home energy meter is available. The meters have clear, easy to read instructions.

The Energy Saving Scotland advice centre is also visiting One Stop Shops in the Falkirk Council area throughout Energy Saving Week. They will show you how to cut your energy bills, how to find out if your home qualifies for any grants for help with insulation or renewable energy. They can also help you to fill in a free home energy check,  generating a free report tailored to you home, telling you how to make it as energy efficient as possible.

Come and visit them on:

Monday 19th 9-3pm - Denny One Stop Shop

Wednesday 21st 9.30 -3pm - Dawson One Stop Shop

Friday 23rd 9-3pm   - Callendar Square One Stop Shop
