Security is everybody's responsibility.

Efforts have been made over the past year to raise awareness and encourage all employees to think and act in a security-conscious manner to help prevent security breaches.

While some improvements have been made, a recent audit of building security has shown that we can still make further progress. Given recent and past incidents in the UK and further afield, it is essential that we all remain vigilant.

What is a security breach?

A security breach might be confidential data being leaked, an intruder gaining access, or a breach resulting in physical harm to a member of staff, customer or client. It’s important that we all think and act in a security-conscious manner so that we can help prevent incidents from happening.

What must we all do?

To help us to stay safe and secure, we must all:

  • Wear our ID badge at all times when in a Council building, making sure it is visible
  • Challenge anyone we see within a Council building who is not wearing a pass
  • Do not let anyone 'tailgate’ us into a building
  • Take personal responsibility for people visiting us in our buildings, letting reception know, ensuring the visitor get a visitor pass, escorting them when they are in our building and making sure they sign in and out
  • Lock our computers and phones when away from our desk
  • Ensure sensitive or private conversations take place in a meeting room where others can’t hear us.
  • Lock away/securely store any sensitive material at the end of the working day
  • Shred any sensitive documents or dispose of them securely
  • When using vehicles at work keep the keys safe at all times: remove the keys from the ignition and secure the vehicle if leaving it unattended - always keeping keys in a secure place
  • Make ourselves aware of and comply with workplace security policies and measures - this includes only using designated entrances and exits and not propping doors open

We need everyone to take action to keep ourselves, our clients, our information and our assets safe at all times.

This is everyone’s responsibility.
