In March, free sanitary products will be available in over 40 council buildings in a bid to tackle ‘period poverty’.

At the end of 2018, the Council announced that free sanitary wear would be made available across all Council buildings. Elected members agreed that sanitary wear would be provided free in ladies toilets to help tackle an often unrecognised issue – the lack of access to sanitary products due to financial constraints.

Over recent years access to sanitary products for females has become a concern.  This is linked to poverty related issues including “in-work” poverty.  The Scottish Government committed to providing sanitary products to students at school, college and university across Scotland.

The Council has been supplying free sanitary products in all its secondary schools since September 2018.

Council Leader Cecil Meiklejohn, said: “With periods still seen as a taboo subject by many, it is often hard for those affected by period poverty to ask for help to cover their basic needs. That is why it is essential that the Council address the issue of period poverty by providing  easy access to free sanitary wear.”

Free sanitary products will be available across all council buildings including Camelon Education Centre, Municipal Buildings, Abbotsford House, social work offices and schools and nurseries.
