Forestry Commission Scotland is seeking views from local people on Callendar Woods.

A ten year Land Management Plan is in the process of being drafted and will on display to members of the public on Friday 13 February 2015 from 11am - 3pm at The Howgate, Falkirk, Saturday 14th February 2015 from 11am - 3pm at Callendar House, Falkirk, and Monday 16th February 2015 from 5pm – 7pm at Hallglen Sports Centre, Falkirk.

A Land Management Plan is an important document, which sets out the vision of the forest in the future and so it is very important that people are aware of what is planned and help shape it.

Councillor Adrian Mahoney, Falkirk Council’s spokesperson for Culture, Leisure and Tourism said: “The Council welcomes the Forestry Commission Scotland’s ongoing, long-term commitment to Callendar Woods by the preparation of a draft 10 year land management plan. Callendar Woods is an important space at the heart of many local communities around Falkirk. The woodland is also a backdrop people visiting Callendar House and Park as well as those walking the new John Muir Way which passes through through the Woods. I would encourage anyone with an interest in Callendar Woods to try to get along to one of the consultation events and share their views.”

Community Ranger Gordon Harper said “We’re really keen to get feedback from as many people as possible about our proposed plans for Callendar Woods.  We’re looking forward to talking to members of the community and hear what they would like to see in their local woods.”

Falkirk’s picturesque Callendar Woods is at least 500 years old.  The historic paths and estate carriageways provide a perfect escape, where you can find panoramic viewpoints, majestic old oaks, sweet chestnuts, yew groves and tree-lined avenues as well as a mausoleum built as a tribute to the Forbes family, Victorian kennels, mining remains and a hill fort.

The consultations will be held as drop in sessions with maps and information on the proposals, and staff will be present to help answer questions and gather comments from the local community and site users on the plans.
