Residents who are being pestered by nuisance and scam calls can now apply for a free call blocking unit to attach to their home landline.

Falkirk Council is teaming up with National Trading Standards to offer the service on a first come first served basis with priority given to those at most risk.

Research from a previous call blocker project showed 99% of irritating calls were blocked after installing the device.

Councillor Laura Murtagh, spokesperson for Public Protection said: “We’d encourage anyone who is targeted by scam callers or who knows someone who is to apply for this free service. It’s easily installed and is really effective at preventing financial harm and intimidating calls.”

PC Bryan Mackie of Police Scotland said: “The crime of fraud is apparent within our local communities and can be carried out by various means including doorstep crime or by being contacted by telephone or e-mail.  It is vital that we safeguard our local residents against becoming victims of this crime type.”

Applications can be made via the Friends Against Scams website or for more information contact Falkirk Council Trading Standards on 01324 504982 or email tradingstandards@falkirk.gov.uk
