Simple tips to protect your home and your belongings:
- Keep your house warm day and night. Check that your heating has been serviced annually.
- When temperatures are low, open your loft hatch.
- Make sure you know where your stopcock is and check you can turn it off.
- Insulation keeps the heat in, while keeping the cold out and the cost down.
- Make sure you have home contents insurance.
- Eat well, keep warm and stay healthy.
- Keep your house warm or at least heat the room you use the most to 21oC.

- Eat at least one hot meal each day and have plenty of hot drinks too.
- Wear several layers of thin clothing rather than one thick layer.
If you do get a burst pipe
- Turn off the water supply at the main stopcock.
- Switch off any water heaters.
- Switch off the central heating system.
- Let solid fuel fires die down.
- Turn on all cold water taps to drain your system.
- Collect water in the bath for washing.
- Warn neighbours who may suffer damage.
- Contact your Neighbourhood office or One Stop Shop.
