Adult learning is a key feature of community learning and development. We work closely with our partners in providing a first step back into learning for the many adults and young people who may have missed out on their own education, or who find they now need new and different skills for life today.
Community Education Service
Falkirk Council’s Community Education Service runs a range of free courses (with free crèche attached) based on your learning needs. You can come along on your own or with a friend and a crèche can be made available if needed.
This course usually runs once a week for around eight weeks and features different topics such as:
- goal setting: deciding what you want to achieve
- assertiveness: how to get your point across
- confidence: ways of improving your self esteem
- making changes: small steps towards achieving your goals
Local community-based courses, programmes and opportunities
Falkirk Council, through the Community Learning and Development Strategy, works in partnership with local adult learners forums, community centre management committees, Forth Valley College and the Workers Educational Association to provide:
- community-based courses
- leisure classes in community centres
- certificated courses leading to a qualifications, such as European Computing Driving Licence or Elementary Food Hygiene
Family Learning
Falkirk Council’s Community Education Service runs a range of free courses (with free crèche attached) based on your learning needs.
Family learning takes place among family and friends - including mums, dads, grandparents and carers - both at home and in local communities.
Family learning programmes and activities may include:
- homework help for parents: keeping up with your 5-14 year olds
- confident parenting: tips to help you help your children
- anti-bullying: how to spot and deal with bullying
- internet safety: how to protect your children on the net
- parent support for special educational needs: extra help when needed
All courses are run in groups with you deciding at the beginning what you want to achieve. As the weeks go by, you can see how you have improved in the identified areas. At the end of the course you will be able to get advice on where you go from there.
If you have any questions, please speak to a Community Education Worker in your area.
Further support is available from the Sensory Centre.
