Introduction to computing

Falkirk Council’s Community Education Service runs a range of free courses (with free crèche attached) based on your learning needs.

Computers are part of everyday life and this course is designed for complete beginners who want to learn how a computer can help you keep in touch with others by email, shopping, finding information or writing letters. You don’t need to be able to type or spell to use a computer and all courses take place in a small friendly group. Some courses can be adapted for specific individuals and groups, for example visually impaired people, deaf people and those with particular needs.

Topics will be agreed at the beginning, but will usually include:

  • email: first steps to emailing
  • internet: how to access the web
  • word processing: basic introduction

Adaptive hardware and software is available for those with special needs and tutors are skilled in adapting the learning to suit your needs.

All courses are run in groups with you deciding at the beginning what you want to achieve. As the weeks go by, you can see how you have improved in the identified areas. At the end of the course you will be able to get advice on where you go from there.
