Long View: Marion Smith
27th June - 23rd August 2009 at Theparkgallery, Callendar Park, Falkirk
The Park Gallery presents Long View, Marion Smith's brand new series of experimental works. The exhibition will include wall-mounted sculptures and image-based works, employing drawing, painting and photography.
The artist's research for the work has been informed by geological processes such as sedimentation, folding, uplift and erosion that form and underlie topography as well as our understanding of the landscape and the history of our visual representation of it.
"I am interested in the way that landscape has been understood and visualised historically. Recently I have been reading about James Hutton whose radical ideas about the age of the earth emerged during the Scottish Enlightenment. I was fascinated to read about his quest to find evidence in the landscape to back up his written theory." Marion Smith
Marion Smith, was born in Fife and is currently based there, she studied sculpture at Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen. On graduating she worked at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop in Aberdeenshire. In tandem with her practice as an artist she has worked as manager of Glasgow Sculpture Studios and at Glasgow School of Art as a technician in the Department of Sculpture and Environmental Art.
Marion has exhibited in the UK, Scandinavia and Japan. She was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 2005. Marion has received a number of major awards throughout her career including the Milly and Benny Schotz RGI award and the Sir William Gillies Bequest RSA. She has work publicly sited in Aberdeenshire, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Linlithgow and Dundee.
"My experimentation with new ways to combine materials and processes, and the use of colour as an integral part of the work has been challenging. It has resulted in a development in my understanding of the possibilities of materials, and ideas for future works." Marion Smith
Theparkgallery is open from Monday to Saturday 10am – 5pm and Sunday 2-5pm. Admission is free.
