Archaeology

Archaelogical Finds

The Archaeology Service is based in Falkirk Museums and its task is to preserve, record and research the lives of those who have lived in the area and to make the results of this work available to the public through a range of methods, including talks and publications.

The Archaeology service:

  • works with the Development Services to provide information and excavation services to avoid the destruction of sites by modern development
  • runs an identification service that will advise people of the nature of found objects (note: this service does not provide valuations)
  • acts as a local agent for the Treasure Trove system and when appropriate lodges claims for material declared Treasure Trove
  • produces and publishes excavation reports, records buildings of architectural interest through scale drawings and photographs, and maintains a register of sites of local archaeological or architectural interest, which is known as the Sites and Monuments Record (SMR)
