What are finding aids?
The finding aids are lists of the records held by Falkirk Council Archives. They contain information about items in the collections, - a description, the date range and the reference number of each item.
Usually each list will have an introductory note, with information about the collection and the history of the organisation or people who created the records.
The finding aids do not contain scanned images of the items. You can see the collections if you visit the Archives in Callendar House.
How to search the finding aids
The finding aids are in PDF format. In order to access them you will need to install Acrobat Reader on your computer or have access to a public computer with this application.

Once the document is displayed you will see a menu on top of the page. This menu is similar to a standard toolbar, although the icons are black and white. It enables users to save documents on to floppy disk, print, move to another page, enlarge the page, and search.
-
The binoculars icon is a search engine that will enable you to trace information. Firstly, enter the term you want to search in the 'Find What' box. Then click 'Find'. This will direct you to the part of the document where the information you require is located. Keep clicking until you have traced all the terms of your search. If you wish to refine your search use the options below the Find What box.
-
If you wish to obtain a printed list, simply click on the printer icon.
Because the capacity of the search engine is limited you must enter very specific terms such as ‘Minute Book’, ‘Carron’. If you cannot find what you are looking for you may need to read the finding aid more closely.
Falkirk Council Archives are committed to widening public access to the archive and photographic collection. If you have any queries or if you require further information please do not hesitate to contact us and we will make every effort to help you.
