The Lands of Kinneil came into the possession of the Hamilton family in the late 13th century. A keep was built c1542 by the 2nd Earl of Arran and the massive gunloops can still be seen at the back of the house.
The Earl of Morton destroyed it in 1570, but a new 'palace' was soon built beside it. Wall paintings of this period include biblical scenes and are the most important of their type in Scotland. In 1677 Anne, Duchess of Hamilton began a programme of renovation, producing the house as it appears today. The House is set in magnificent grounds, replete with bridges, ha-has, gate piers and stables.
