FIDGET: Gary Bolam & Lewis Holleran
Saturday 27 February - Saturday 18 April 2010
Fidget brings together the work of two recent graduates from Glasgow School of Art. The joint exhibition of new work in the Park Gallery focuses on light and dark both literally and symbolically. The exhibition will include video projections and a series of framed line drawings produced as prints, and an installation that represents the sculptural interpretations of those drawings.
Gary Bolam first exhibited his work at the Park Gallery in 2005 in a group exhibition of Falkirk College students' work. His work is often constructed using a lexicon of images, gestures and texts that he has built up over previous exhibitions; and is reformed and recreated attentively yet intuitively to create new works. His work is the sum of all of the individual parts, yet a scratch beneath the surface reveals a content that asks questions of validity, the fragility of life and the viewer's role in relation to the works. His work often creates an emotive response.
"I suppose that I should mention that I have received a kidney transplant and this has influenced the way I work and approach things significantly. There was a point where doctors told me that I would have two weeks to live if they didn't intervene. This intervention saved my life in no uncertain terms. The work that I had on show for my degree showin Glasgow School of Art in 2008 played with this intervention and suspension of the inevitable." Gary Bolam
Lewis Holleran has shown work across Scotland, including two works in 2009's Edinburgh Arts Festival. Primarily working with video installations, he is interested in atmospherics and lighting. He works with themes central to Film noir, immersion and the sensory perception of contrast, rhythm and timing. In 2008 Lewis participated in Mineral Park a collaborative exhibition at the Park Gallery.
"It is a brilliant opportunity for me to show work at the Park Gallery. Galleries such as these are so important to Scotland's art scene. For emerging artists to be able to show work in professional and respected galleries, both in their home towns and even more so in other cities, is a really important part of their development and without such spaces Scotland's art scene would wither." Lewis Holleran
This is the first time that these two emerging artists will have shown work together and are expecting to exhibit a version of their show in Glasgow at the same time as Glasgow International.
