On the following pages we have put together some advice and information on where to find out more about your Scottish ancestors. Advice is available from staff on which records to try next; sometimes you cannot see the family tree for the family forest!
Information from relatives
The first thing to do is to gather together as much information as you can e.g. talk to relatives about your family, what they did, where they came from etc., collect family documents e.g. certificates, photographs, letters, family bibles etc. These can contain vital information when tracing your ancestors.
Starting with the most recent births, deaths and marriages you should work backwards from these. Don't worry if you have limited information on your family, you can start searching from just your own name and date of birth.
