Drugs and their effects

There are many drugs that are capable of abuse whether by obtaining illegally (illicit or prescription), legally on prescription or over the counter and will either give a stimulant, depressant or hallucinogenic effect although in some cases the expected outcome could be very different for the individual.

In view of the unpredictability of drugs a definitive effect would be difficult to report although the following group effect could be expected from the drugs shown:

  • stimulants (MDMA, ecstasy, amphetamine, cocaine, crack cocaine, amphetamine, amyl and butyl nitrates), stimulates the central nervous system, making things seem as if they’re going faster, including thoughts, speech and the body.
  • depressants (heroin, tranquillisers, methadone, volatile substances), depresses the central nervous system slowing everything down, including thoughts, speech and the body.
  • hallucinogens (LSD, cannabis, magic mushrooms) alter the way a person sees, hears and feels things, causing hallucinations and confusion.

Some drugs may have more than one effect, for example, many cannabis users cite a major relaxing effect but on occasion, particularly with extensive use, may experience hallucinations or a sense of paranoia

The effect of taking a drug is not always immediate, has varying lasting effects, is dependent on the individual and may relate to expectation.

Continued use of any drug can lead to dependency and excessive use or combined use of some drugs can lead to further health risks. The user of illegal drugs is exposing themselves to further health risks given the nature of production of these materials, unpredictable dosage and possibly unpredictable effect.
