Around 90% of cylinders in circulation within the UK are owned by five major companies. When you purchase compressed gas, the cylinder containing the compressed gas remains the property of the company who supplied it to you.
The simplest and best way to deal with cylinders which are of no further use is to return them to the original supplier if known.
Falkirk Council has worked closely with industry experts and emergency services to establish a protocol for the safe disposal and use of pressurised gas cylinders.
You may wish to consider the following questions.
-
Where did you purchase the cylinder?
-
What do you use it for?
-
What colour is the cylinder?
-
Are there any labels on it?
-
Are there any other markings on it?
-
What height/size is the cylinder?
The Customer Contact Centre (01324 506070) will provide information on enquiries from the public in relation to compressed gas cylinders of all types including camping gas and barbeque gas cylinders, and will advise that, in the first instance, cylinders should be returned to the supplier. If this is not possible, identified commercially retailed LPG cylinders may be taken to either of the Council's two recycling centres|.
More information is available from the British Compressed Gas Association (BCGA).
If you are unable to identify the owner and type of cylinder you hold, the following information will help you to do so.
