Carron Primary School help the Rotary Club of Falkirk pick up a Prestigous Award.

Members of Falkirk Rotary Club with this years winning school Carron Primary

For the past 6 years Falkirk Council's Litter Strategy Team and the Rotary Club of Falkirk have teamed up to coordinate a schools environmental competition for 12 schools that fall under the jurisdiction of Falkirk Rotary Club. This was originally a tidy playground competition but over the years has evolved to include other topics such as Recycling and Biodiversity and, as such, is now the Eco Awareness competition.

Each school is visited by a judging panel consisting of Rotarians and a member of the Litter Strategy Team. The panel are met by pupils and taken on a tour of the school to see and hear all about their environmental projects.

This competition benefits all involved from the schools, who compete to win the top prize of £100, to the Rotarians, who aim to improve their community by raising awareness of the problem of litter through direct involvement with the pupils and staff.

This year the Rotary Club and the Council's Litter Strategy Team put together an awards submission for a Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI) Award – The Rodney Huggins RIBI Environment Award. The Rotary Club of Falkirk became the 11th winner of the award and picked up their trophy at the end of April.

National Spring Clean at Carron Primary School

Carron Primary School National Spring Clean event

Primary 4K and primary 4/5A from Carron Primary School| took part in Keep Scotland Beautiful's National Spring Clean 2009|.

We did our clean up on Wednesday 22nd April in the afternoon. We had forty nine children and five adults taking part. We only got a little drop of litter from our playground. We went outside the school gate onto the pavement and around the grassy area at the underpass. We collected twenty bags of rubbish, and most of it was plastic bottles. We thought we did very well with our clean up and we hope that the mess with the litter doesn't collect outside our school again.

Rubbish Radio Ad

Six high schools entered a competition to develop an anti-litter radio jingle. The standard of entries was very high but we could only have one winner. Bo'ness Academy had their jingle professionally produced and aired on Central FM throughout November. You can find out more and hear all the jingles by visiting the Actvityzone|.

Community Litter Plan

The Community Litter Plan has now been revised and updated. The new Community Litter Plan 2008 - 2011 is available here|.

The Community Litter Plan outlines what we are doing to tackle the problems of litter, dog fouling and flytipping across the Falkirk Council area.

It details the services we provide, our enforcement policies and the educational and promotional activities we are undertaking with schools, communities and businesses.

It also provides information on how you can help us to reduce the litter problem in your area.

Fun and Games at Bonnybridge Eco Day

The "Make Bonnybridge Bonny" initiative got off to a flying start with the Eco Day held at the Community Centre on the 8th July.

Magnet Design
Making magnets from
plastic bottles
About 40 children took part in a variety of activities; making fridge magnets from recycled materials, litter orienteering and the infamous space hopper-litter picking race. Enthusiastic teams of children and supervisors then cleared dozens of bags of cans, bottles, crisp packets and other litter from the community centre grounds, the Memorial Gardens and Wellplace Terrace Park.

Bonny T Shirts
The design crew
The desire to keep Bonnybridge bonny was expressed by the children designing their own t-shirts – there were some very artistic and imaginative visions including depictions of local beauty spots and wildlife, tourist attractions and of course the famous Bonnybridge UFOs.

The day ended with a fun quiz about recycling – do you know how many minutes the energy saved by recycling a bottle power your computer for?

We hope to repeat the Eco Day again soon.
