Reducing your waste

Waste
If we don’t produce as much waste in the first place, then we have less to deal with in the end. Reduce means lowering the amount of waste that we produce and is also called waste minimisation.
Reject junk mail

If you want to minimise the amount of junk mail that you receive then sign up to the Mail Preference Service.  Reducing the amount of junk mail that you throw away will help save natural resources, transportation emissions and landfill space. Mailing Preference forms are available online at www.mpsonline.org.uk|

Home composting

Home composting your uncooked fruit, vegetable and garden waste will help to reduce the amount of waste you produce and create a useful end product for your garden. Further information can be found on the page about home composting|.

Avoid over packaged items

You can avoid over packaged items by choosing alternatives, for example, who not select loose fruit and vegetables instead of pre-packaged alternatives when you next go shopping?

Avoid disposable items

By avoiding disposable items you can help to reduce the amount of waste that you create. Many companies now promote disposable options, such as razors and cleaning products. These products create more waste than reusable alternatives and may not offer the best value for money. Where possible, consider choosing quality products that will last for a long time.

Buy in bulk

Buying items in bulk or in bigger sizes could save you money and reduce the amount of packaging waste that you produce. Larger sized alternatives are available for a wide range of products, ranging from breakfast cereals to washing powders.
