We encourage tenants to improve their homes, however, some home improvements will require permission.
These include:

installation of bathroom, shower or fitted kitchen.
-
fencing and driveways.
-
loft and cavity wall insulation.
-
window replacements, double or secondary glazing.
-
installation of central heating.
-
erection of garages and sheds including pigeon lofts.
-
any structural alteration, including the removal of dividing walls.
-
extensions or conservatories.
Compensation for improvements
At the end of your tenancy, you may be eligible for compensation for certain types of improvement such as installing a new kitchen or central heating. This only applies to work carried out after 1st April 1994.
The amount of compensation is based on the length of time the fitting has been in place, its current condition and how much it cost to install. Compensation is payable at the end of a tenancy.
No compensation is payable if:
-
the property is repossessed by the Council due to a breach of tenancy conditions.
-
the compensation payable is less than £50.00

Decorating advice
We can give you advice about any decoration you wish to do. However, some types of decoration cause problems with maintenance, or when reletting the property.
These include:
-
Artex used on walls
-
black or very dark painted woodwork
-
polystyrene tiles on walls or ceilings, which should not be used for safety reasons
If you use these materials or finishes we may ask you to restore the property to an acceptable condition if you move.
