Renting privately

The private rented sector makes up only a small part of the housing stock in the area (approximately 3%) but it is still an option you might want to consider. 

Private rented housing tends to be found mainly in Falkirk but properties are available throughout in the area e.g. Grangemouth and the Braes. 

The cost of renting privately

The cost of renting privately varies between individual properties depending on size, location and the landlord. As a rough guide rents are in the region of:

  • 1 bedroom property: £300-350 per month
  • 2 bedroom property: £400-500 per month
  • 3 bedroom property: £500-700 per month

Finding out about private rented housing

There are a number of reputable private landlords and letting agents in the Falkirk Council area. The local papers are a good place to look for properties to rent in the private sector.

Local papers

The Herald comes out on a Thursday and is available from most newsagents in the Falkirk Council area. It has a section on flats to let in the local area. You can also place an advert in the paper if you are looking for a flat to rent.

  • Falkirk and Grangemouth Advertisers 

The Advertisers are free papers, which are distributed to households in the Falkirk and Grangemouth area. They come out on a Wednesday and have a letting section.

The Bo’ness Journal comes out on a Friday and is available to residents in the Bo’ness area. It has a letting section.

Other sources of information
Some landlords advertise in the windows of local newsagents, post offices and on the small advertisements boards in supermarkets.
 
Many of the flats for rent in the Falkirk area are let through word of mouth so ask around colleagues and friends.
 
Note that it is an offence:
  • For accommodation or letting agencies to charge for putting your name on a list
  • For landlords in Scotland to levy any form of premium on the rent
