Renting Privately

The private rented sector makes approximately 5% of the housing stock in the area and may be an option you might want to consider. 

Private rented housing tends to be found mainly in Falkirk but properties are available throughout in the Falkirk Council area, for example: Grangemouth and the Braes. 

The cost of renting privately

The cost of renting privately varies between individual properties depending on size, location and the landlord. As a rough guide rents are in the region of:

  • 1 bedroom property: £357.55 per month
  • 2 bedroom property: £477.87 per month
  • 3 bedroom property: £578.30 per month

Finding out about private rented housing

There are a large number of registered private landlords and letting agents in the Falkirk Council area. Please ensure that your prospective landlord is registered (as required by law), by requesting their registration number which should look like this: - - - - -/240/- - - - -. The digits 240 denotes a Falkirk Council registration number which each landlord must have.

Local papers

The Falkirk Herald comes out on a Thursday and is available from most newsagents in the Falkirk Council area. It has a section on flats available to let in the local area. You can also place an advert if you are looking for a flat to rent.

  • Falkirk Advertiser
  • Grangemouth Advertiser

Both Advertisers are free papers, which are distributed to households in the Falkirk and Grangemouth area. They come out on a Wednesday and have a letting section.

The Bo'ness Journal comes out on a Friday and is available to residents in the Bo'ness area. It has a letting section.

Other sources of information
  • Some landlords advertise available properties online. You may want to search online for properties to rent in falkirk.
  • Some landlords advertise available properties in the windows of local newsagents, post offices and on the small advertisements boards in supermarkets.
  • Many flats for rent are let through word of mouth. You might want to ask colleagues and friends of any properties that they know are for let.

Note that it is an offence:

  • For accommodation or letting agencies to charge for putting your name on a list.
  • For landlords in Scotland to levy any form of premium on the rent.
