Careers Scotland School Non Attenders Project (SNAP)

If you live in one of the priority areas and want to find out what this project is doing specifically in your area, please contact Valerie Ormiston|.

The School Non Attenders Project aims to extend and enhance key worker support to highly vulnerable groups with whom it is difficult to engage given current resources, namely school non-attenders approaching their school leaving date.

Moreover, the programme offers a range of tailored, structured activity to this targeted group with the aim of developing the skills and confidence that will assist them to make a positive transition on leaving school.

Alternative provision in school is not practical for this group due to their poor attendance record. In Falkirk the attendance rates for all secondary school pupils is 89.9% which is slightly lower than the Scottish average of 90.6%.

This reduces for the most vulnerable pupils at risk of becoming NEET (not in education, employment or training) and some pupils have attendance levels below 60% which results in difficulty in attaining and sustaining a positive transition from school.

Interventions such as the Positive Transitions Programme have also experienced issues with attendance with 20% being unable to sustain the customised provision and progress to a post school option due to attendance problems.
