Crime rates
Crime levels in our area remain relatively low when compared to other areas. We enjoy one of the lowest crime rates and highest detection rates in Scotland. This is supported by the fact that the number of crimes per 1,000 population in the area per annum is 63 compared to 82 across Scotland. Well over 60% of reported crimes are detected in this area compared to the Scottish average of approximately 45%. Even the modest increase in reported crimes can be explained by changes in police recording procedures which mean that more of the incidents reported to the police are now recorded as crimes.
Tackling the causes of crime
We are also committed to a proactive approach to tackling the causes of crime. An extensive programme of projects is planned to tackle anti-social behaviour, with organisations working closely together to ensure optimum effectiveness and achievement in this area. Action will also be targeted on deprived areas through our Community Regeneration approach which places a strong emphasis on community safety.
Types of crime
Although serious crime remains a very small proportion of overall crime, the level of crime of this type (which includes the crimes of murder, rape and serious assault) has fallen by 13%. Vandalism may have shown a marked increase in recent years but this has been accompanied by increased detection rates and amended recording procedures.
