Climate Challenge Fund

Climate Challenge Fund
The Climate Challenge Fund is all about supporting communities to tackle climate change by reducing their carbon emissions. Over 250 communities have been funded and are working hard now to deliver carbon emissions reductions.

The Climate Challenge Fund has a total resource of £27.4 million over the three financial years 2008-11 and is a grant scheme administered within the Sustainable Action Fund.

As announced in the Scottish budget for 2011-12, the Climate Challenge Fund has been extended for an additional year at the increased spending level of £10.3 million for 2011-12. Applications to this new scheme went live on 5 January 2011 with the last closing date for applications being 25 February 2011. Scottish communities were provided with the opportunity to bid for those funds to make a real difference by reducing their carbon emissions. Applications were open to communities already in receipt of funding, and we also encouraged new communities to apply. We are grateful for your continued interest in the Climate Challenge Fund and look forward to continuing to work with Scotland's carbon saving communities.

Success Stories

The Climate Challenge Fund has already assisted some great projects that have successfully made significant carbon emissions reductions. Your community may even be able to visit these projects and learn from their experiences. Please click on the link below to find out more about these projects and how you could apply for the funding.  The successful projects already awarded a grant include:

  • Supporting a village-wide energy efficiency scheme, to survey every property and provide free insulation where required
  • Developing a community heat and power scheme, to provide more cost effective energy
  • Promoting the use of locally sustainable powered electric vehicles in rural areas
  • Converting a local leisure centre to more energy efficient lighting
  • Providing cycling training for young people to encourage more sustainable and active travel
