Corporate Address Gazetteer (CAG)

What is it?

  • Falkirk Council introduced a new Corporate Address Gazetteer (CAG) in May 2005 as part of our commitment to Modernising Government.
  • It is an addressing system that provides all addresses to Planning and Building Standards.
  • This will eventually provide all of the addresses throughout each Council Service.
  • All official postal addresses, within the Council area, are held within it.
  • Non-postal addresses, such as development sites, are created with reference to the closest officially addressed property.

Why is it needed?

  • Each Service within the Council holds address information in many formats and in a number of systems.
  • Using the Corporate Address Gazetteer means that address information is only held and maintained once.
  • This reduces costs and time for the Council as a whole, because one system can be updated instead of many.
  • This means that official address information is more likely to be accurate.
  • Non-postal addresses can be found more easily because they are all created using the same method.

How does this affect me?

Why is the address on letters you send me slightly different from that on the original application form?

This is because the Corporate Address Gazetteer holds the address officially given to the property by the Council and the postcode allocated from Royal Mail.

Why are non-official addresses worded differently from that on the original application form?

This is because we create non-official addresses using a National Standard that requires addresses to be created with reference to the nearest officially addressed property.

Why is the development name given by the builder not included in non-postal addresses?

This is because non-postal addresses are created so that they can be found easily using a map. Names of development sites don’t usually indicate the location and so this would make searching for information really difficult.

What if the address on my drawings does not match the location the Council is using on documentation?

This may be a problem if revised drawings are submitted but can be avoided by always quoting the application reference, which is shown on your acknowledgement letter, on all correspondence and revised drawings.

What should I do if I notice that an official address on letters you send me is wrong?

Contact any of the people named on this page and they will investigate any incorrect addresses.

What should I do if I need a new official address or need my official address changed for any reason?

You can apply to the Council’s Street Naming & Numbering Department |at the address shown to obtain a new address or to change an existing address. They will then notify national bodies for you; like Emergency Services, Utility Companies, Assessors, Royal Mail etc. This ensures that national bodies know your address exists and that their systems are kept up to date.
