The Building Standards Unit has powers to take the necessary action where any building is considered dangerous or threatens public safety. A 24-hour, seven-days-a-week emergency response service is provided. Telephone the council Emergency Control Room on 01324 503050.
Dangerous buildings
Powers exist, under Sections 28, 29 and 30 of the Building (Scotland) Act 2003, for Local Authorities to take appropriate action where any building has become or is likely to become dangerous.
This would include dealing with such incidents as structural failure, storm damage and assisting the fire service or police in matters relating to the stability of buildings.
Unauthorised alterations/works to buildings
Power exists under Section 27 of the Building (Scotland) Act 2003, for Local Authorities to take appropriate action where any work for which a Building Warrant is required is being carried out without approval or in contravention of the warrant approved.
Licensing
The Building Standards Unit also provides a service advising on matters relative to the licensing of various types of premises under the Licensing (Scotland) Act 1976.
Safety at sports grounds
The Building Standards Unit acts in an advisory capacity, reporting to the Licensing Authority, in matters relating to crowd safety, means of escape and access for the disabled.
