Planning permission will probably not be required for alterations / extensions provided they meet all of the conditions outlined below. Written confirmation should always be sought before carrying out work.
The alterations or extension:

have a restricted floor area for detached and semi-detached houses - floor area of extension not greater than 24m² or 20% of the total floor area of the house, whichever is the greater, but never more than 30m²

have a restricted floor area for terraced houses - floor area of extension not greater than 16m2 or 10% of the total floor area of the house, whichever is the greater, but never more than 30m²

must have a restricted ground-covering area: the total ground area covered by the extension and any other buildings within the curtilage of the house must not exceed 30% of curtilage, excluding the area of the original house

must not be closer to any road than the original house, unless the extended house would be more than 20m from the relevant road

must not be higher than the original house

must not be more than 4m in height if the extension is within 2m of the boundary of the property

must not affect the roof of the original house.
