You can utilise the space in your loft by installing this type of window. If you live in a house (
not a flat) this does not require planning permission provided that:

the property is not located in a conservation area

the property is not a listed building

the window does not project more than 10cm above the plane of the roof when closed (see image)

the window does not exceed 10% of the surface area of the existing roof.
