Coping with emergencies

Snow

Snow

  • Make essential journeys only. If you must travel, make sure that you are fully prepared for all events and conditions.
  • Obtain a weather forecast and if possible determine the road conditions for the journey you are going to take.
  • Put a car emergency pack in your car at the beginning of winter.

Clouds of hazardous materials

  • Go indoors, stay there and tune into Cental FM (103.1 FM).
  • Close all doors and windows, shut down all ventilation and air conditioning systems and block obvious draughts. Remember to unblock these vents before switching everything back on.
  • Extinguish all flames - for example, pilot lights.
  • Get out your home emergency pack.
  • Cover or put all food in a closed, sealed cupboard or container.
  • Wash and/or peel all fruit and vegetables before eating.
  • Do not use food that is leafy or difficult to wash.
  • Do not try to collect your children from school unless told to do so. They will be looked after properly by the school.
  • Do not go outside until you are told to do so. (With some chemicals everything may appear quite normal and you won't be able to see or smell them).
  • Do not use rainwater.
  • Do not pet animals that have been outside.

Listen for public announcements, they will inform you when you can go outside and of other actions you should take.

Air crash

A burning aircraft can release dangerous substances, so if outside you must:

  • keep upwind
  • stay well clear
  • inform the police if you are a witness

Emergency evacuation

Emergency evacuation of houses will only happen in extreme circumstances.

  • If the police ask you to leave your home, don't argue. They are only concerned for your safety. They will know the dangers and risks better than you.
  • They will ask you to go to a Reception/Rest Centre. If you decide to go somewhere else, let the police know, so you can be accounted for.
  • Don't worry if you have special needs, arrangements will be made for you by those responding.
  • If there is time, take along medicines, warm clothes, any special foods, personal documents and immediate valuables - food, baskets, leads etc for your pets.
  • If you have time, before you leave - make sure fires are out, switch off water and electricity and then lock up.
