Air quality

The air that we breathe is vital for our existence and yet, it is something that we all too often take for granted.

The air in our atmosphere consists of around 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and a number of other gases. The average human adult breathes in 360 litres of this oxygen per day! The quality of the air that we breathe can therefore have a significant impact on our health and on our environment.

All local authorities have a legal duty to monitor air quality within their areas. Falkirk Council currently has six real time air quality monitoring stations located at:

  • Grangemouth - Municipal Chambers
  • Grangemouth - Inchyra Park
  • Grangemouth - Moray Primary school
  • Falkirk - Hope Street
  • Falkirk - Park Street
  • Bo'ness - Town Hall

We also have a network of 93 passive diffusion tube sites monitoring mainly traffic pollution. This equipment helps us to build up a picture of air quality throughout our area and, through the use of modelling, we are able to predict future air quality trends.

Air quality in the Falkirk area is generally good
with few exceedences of the national standards.
