Animal welfare

The Environmental Protection Unit is responsible for carrying out the animal welfare regulatory functions required by legislation.

Licenses are required to operate any of the following businesses or activities:

  • Dog breeding establishments
  • Animal boarding establishments (kennels, catteries and home boarding in domestic premises)
  • Horse riding establishments
  • Pet shops
  • Keeping dangerous wild animals. For example: monkeys, alligators, and some types of snake.
Advice can be given on which types of animal are covered.

Regular inspections of these premises are carried out, sometimes together with a veterinary surgeon. It is illegal to operate any of these businesses, or to keep dangerous wild animals, without the appropriate licence.
