The Environmental Protection Unit is responsible for carrying out the animal welfare regulatory functions required by legislation.
Licenses are required to operate any of the following businesses or activities:

Dog breeding establishments

Animal boarding establishments (kennels, catteries and home boarding in domestic premises)

Horse riding establishments

Pet shops

Keeping dangerous wild animals. For example: monkeys, alligators, and some types of snake.
Advice can be given on which types of animal are covered.
Regular inspections of these premises are carried out, sometimes together with a veterinary surgeon. It is illegal to operate any of these businesses, or to keep dangerous wild animals, without the appropriate licence.
