Health and safety at work

We have a statutory responsibility for the enforcement of health and safety law in a variety of workplaces. These are mainly in the distribution, retail, office, leisure and catering sectors.

Our main tasks are:

  • to undertake health and safety inspections at a frequency determined by risk assessment or otherwise in compliance with statute or centrally issued guidance
  • to assess all notified accidents and secure appropriate actions
  • to maintain records and report on activities at required intervals

Using the navigation menu, guidance can be found on some of the enquiries we receive most regularly.

Detailed information on a wide range of health and safety issues is available on the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website|

The HSE site includes a section with free advice leaflets available for download.

Construction safety

The construction industry remains one of the most hazardous in the UK, with fatal accidents in 2007/08 over four time the industry average. There is also strong evidence of greatly in creased risk to those working for small, medium or micro businesses in the construction sector

If you are having construction or refurbishment work done on your premises you may need to notify the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and you may have other duties as well. To find out more, visit the HSE website|.

The HSE has up to date information and free leaflets on construction safety, CDM 2007, (construction design and maintenance) and related topics at the HSE website|.
