Invasive Species

Japanese Knotweed, Himalayan Balsam and Giant Hogweed are all highly invasive plants and as such it is an offence to plant it or cause it to grow in the wild.

Disturbance to Knotweed in particular stresses the plant and can cause it to produce more rhizomes and spread, therefore cutting it or strimming would only increase its spread. In areas close to built structures it can undermine foundations and grow through concrete.

Contact with cut Giant Hogweed can cause a severe skin reaction to sunlight.

It is important that anyone who could be at risk and in contact with these plants are aware of what they look like for their own safety and to prevent further spread of these invasive plants in the Falkirk area.

Below are information leaflets on all three plants courtesy of Clackmannanshire and Stirling Environmental Trust.  There are contact numbers for SEPA and SNH should you require any other advice or guidelines regarding these species of plants.
