Development Framework for the former RSNH site, Larbert

RSNH site
On 08 December 2004 Falkirk Council approved the Development Framework for the former RSNH (Royal Scottish National Hospital) site at Larbert, following its selection as the site to accommodate the new acute hospital for the Forth Valley area.

The purpose of the Development Framework is to guide the future development of the site whilst safeguarding its exceptional natural environment.

The Development Framework seeks to identify the form and location of new development within the site, identify infrastructure and access requirements, as well as requirements relating to the management and maintenance of the parkland and woodland.

The hospital was completed and opened in 2010. In accordance with the Development Framework, a masterplan for the residual RSNH estate (the area outwith the hospital site) has been produced by NHS Forth Valley and was approved by the Council in January 2010.

There are two main elements to the masterplan:

  • the management of the woodland, parkland and loch areas as a woodland park for public amenity and access; and
  • the restoration of Larbert House, stables and walled garden, together with the development of adjacent development sites

With regard to the woodland, parkland and loch areas, NHS Forth Valley are in discussions with the Forestry Commission and Central Scotland Forest Trust with a view to the securing the necessary capital works to bring these areas up to standard, as well as long-term management.

In respect of Larbert House and the development sites, these have been subject to a marketing exercise by NHS Forth Valley.
