Sustainable development policies

Revised Environmental Policy, May 2006

In May 2006, Falkirk Council adopted a revised environmental policy. The policy makes a clear statement about the Council’s commitment to monitor and address the impacts of its actions on the environment at a local and global level. This general policy will be followed by the development of detailed policies and implementation plans to cover individual topics. Work is underway in relation to waste, energy and procurement

Fairtrade Policy, May 2004
In May 2004, Falkirk Council supported a resolution that it should support the development of Fairtrade. All tea and coffee purchased by the council must be Fairtrade accredited, including that served in meetings, outlets and the Council members’ lounge. Council canteens already serve a selection of other Fairtrade products. The Council is a member of the Falkirk Fairtrade Steering Group and will continue to support and promote the growth of the Fairtrade movement in the Council area.
Strategic Community Plan 2006-2010, May 2006
The Strategic Community Plan is an overarching strategy to which all public sector agencies, the voluntary sector, the community sector and the private sector can contribute. It is intended to shape the future of the local community over the next five years.
The following five themes of the SCP complement and directly contribute to achieving the vision of Sustainable Falkirk:
  1. increase jobs and enterprise for all of our citizens
  2. enable citizens to live healthily and safely
  3. stimulate working partnerships amongst agencies, organisations, citizens and communities
  4. tackle disadvantage and discrimination in all of its forms
  5. create and sustain an environment in which people want to live, visit and work.
Future Plans section
The Council is in the process of developing a suite of Supplementary Planning Guidance notes (SPGs). They will aim to encourage local developers to consider sustainability issues when planning their projects. Topics will include: Shopfronts, House extensions and alterations and Sustainable design.
