The revised document was adopted by Falkirk Council in May 2006. This document varies from its predecessor in that the strategy and action plan were separated out. This was because it was felt that whilst the strategy changed slowly, the action plan was a dynamic document, requiring to be updated on an annual basis.
Strategy summary
The document examines why a strategy is necessary, its role and how it affects those working and living in the Falkirk area. Sustainable development’s profile has soared over the past three years due to developments in law and policy, with media playing a key role in raising public awareness.
The document looks at the seven original action topics and examines progress made against each, with examples of sustainability projects peppered throughout the document. It examines the role of the Strategic Community Plan and other key policy documents.
Partners and the community were consulted on how best to revise the documents. These comments, combined with UK and national priority guidance, led to a revision of priorities. The new document focuses on four priority areas and three mechanisms:
Priority areas
-
Energy
-
Wise use of resources
-
Greener transport
-
Protect and enhance the natural and man made environment.
Mechanisms
-
Education and awareness
-
Integrating sustainable development principles into other areas of policy
-
Creating and sustaining thriving communities.
The strategy gives an outline of how these seven topics will be addressed through the Action Plan.
