Where does the recycling material go?

Action Recycle

Action Recycle, based in Denny, was set up in 1992 by Scottish Conservation Project Trust (now BTCV) as an experimental recycling project, working in partnership with initially Falkirk and Stirling Councils and then with West Lothian.

At its height Action Recycle's "Blue Bag" collection was available to more than 140,000 houses in Falkirk, Stirling and West Lothian and recycled about 5000 tons of paper each year.

When they started up in 1992, Action Recycle began to pick up small amounts of paper from local schools in and around Denny and Bonnybridge. The schools were supplied with blue bags and their paper was collected with the rest of the household paper.

Now paper and cardboard is collected from all schools in the Falkirk Council area separately from the household collections. This allows the tonnages from schools to be recorded separately.

From Action Recycle, the paper and cardboard is passed to various paper mills across the country. The cardboard is pulped and made into wallpaper lining. The paper is recycled into news print for newspapers.
