As part of the Council's on going commitment to delivering Sustainable Development, a waste recycling pilot was undertaken in advance of introducing recycling systems across all Council services. The aim is to reduce the use of landfill disposal, reduce and reuse resources (whenever possible) and increase recycling.
Seven locations participated in the pilot. A cross-section of sites were selected to include characteristics such as current waste practises, headcount, spend on waste disposal, and public usage. This helped ensure a representative profile of waste across different services is achieved. The pilot ran for 6 months (April to September 2005) and recycling targets for relevant Services were set.
A comprehensive package of support was provided to pilot sites, including training of green champions, equipment demonstrations, promotion and publicity of good practise.
