How we manage our waste is of fundamental importance to achieving environmental sustainability (healthy society and economy). Falkirk Council is committed to sustainable waste management which focuses on following 3 simple rules: reducing, reusing and recycling waste with disposal as the last option.
All Scottish Council must meet stringent waste targets (shown below) set by the Scottish Executive and the European Union. The Forth Valley Area Waste Plan has been developed to help meet these targets. These relate to Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). MSW is household waste, waste produced by the Council and commercial waste that the Council collects.
Year and target
2006 - 25% of MSW to be recycled or composted
2008 - 30% of MSW to be recycled or composted
2010 - 25% of Biodegradable Municipal Waste (BMW)
2013 - 50% of Biodegradable Municipal Waste (BMW)
2020 - 75% of Biodegradable Municipal Waste (BMW)
2020 - 50% of MSW to be recycled for compost
The Forth Valley Area Waste Plan involves Falkirk, Stirling and Clackmannanshire Councils, SEPA, Scottish water and Scottish Enterprise Forth Valley working together. Our first aim is to reach 25% recycling and composting of all municipal waste by 2006.
