Starting school for the first time is a big event for children. If they have attended a nursery which is attached to the school, this can often make the transition easier.

Schools will normally provide opportunities for parents and children to visit the school before the end of the summer to familiarise the child with their new environment.

Starting school for the first time is not only a big change for the child but also for the parents. You may feel worried that your child won't be happy, may not make friends or won't enjoy school. Try to remember that most children do love and enjoy their time at school.

Here are some things you can do to help them settle in

  • Help them to develop skills to be independent eg dressing themselves and looking after their possessions.
  • Explain to your child what will happen on the first day at school.
  • Talk positively to them about starting school and listen to and acknowledge any anxious feelings or fears they might have.
  • In the week before starting school try to get your child used to the times they will need to get up in the morning.
  • Advise the school of any special needs or medical problems your child might have.
  • Try to attend as many meetings as you can both before and after your child starts school. This will help you to understand how the school operates and see how your child is progressing at school.
