The new parent councils came into force on 1 August 2007.
The role of the parent council is to:

support the school in its work with parents

represent the views of parents
-
promote contact between the school, parents, pupils, providers of nursery education and the community
-
report to the Parent Forum
Each school is setting up or has set up their parent council in the way that suits them best with support from the headteacher and the local authority as required.
Many schools held an open meeting that all parents could attend, to hear more about the new act and join a working party to discuss what kind of parent council they wanted for their school.
