Police Pension Scheme benefits

The main benefits provided by the Scheme are:

  • a pension (with the option of, a tax free lump sum), if you retire:
    • on completing 30 years service, or
    • from age 50, with at least 25 years service, or
    • from age 55, with at least 2 years service, or
    • on permanent ill health grounds.

(n.b. other age/service requirements may apply if you are promoted to higher ranks)

  • a tax free lump sum if you die in service.
  • spouses’ and children’s pensions if you die either in service or in retirement.
  • enhanced benefits if you are retired on ill health grounds
  • enhanced benefits if you are retired because of an injury on duty.

If you leave before retiring, your benefits can usually stay in the Scheme or be transferred to another pension arrangement.

If you leave with less than 2 years service, you can have a refund of contributions.
