Adapting houses for elderly or disabled people

Support is available to help older or disabled people to continue living comfortably and independently in their own homes.

An assessment will normally be carried out to identify your needs and make sure that they are met in the most cost effective way. The assessment will look at your current difficulties and long-term needs. It may be possible to adapt your home to meet your needs by e.g. fitting handrails or a shower or ramping access.

However, if you have complex needs, it may not be possible to adapt your home to make it suitable for you. In this situation we will talk to you about moving to a property which is more suitable or can be adapted to meet your needs.

Handrails, grab rails and external lights can be requested by contacting your local Neighbourhood ofice/One Stop Shop|. For more information, or to arrange an assessment for equipment, adaptations or home care you should contact the Community Care Team| at your local Social Work Office|.
