The range of equipment and adaptations provided is very wide and includes items such as assistive technology, sensory impairment items, profiling beds, commodes, standard walking items, stairlifts, external rails and banisters, ramps and bathroom adaptations.
There are a number of services who can provide equipment and adaptations to help you to stay at home safely and independently for as long as possible.
How do I apply?
If you have a disability and think you could benefit from the provision of equipment and/or an adaptation to your property, please contact the community care team at your local social work office| who will arrange for an assessment of your needs| to be carried out.
To request an assessment for nursing equipment to support your care at home, such as a commode, or mattress, please contact your local Health Centre.
If you are leaving hospital, the hospital occupational therapist will assess your needs and arrange the equipment you need to make living at home easier.
If you are looking for equipment to help your mobility, such as a wheelchair or a zimmer frame, this will require a professional assessment. You should contact your local Health Centre about this or you can ask your community nurse or Community Care worker for advice on how to arrange this.
How much does it cost?
There is no charge for equipment as this is issued on a loan basis. Some items are provided for a limited time, e.g. a high chair for 4 months following an operation or illness.
There are no charges for adaptations unless you own your own home.
