Court Social Work Services

Falkirk Criminal Justice Service provides staff every working day to Falkirk Sheriff Court, primarily covering each day's custody court and the Thursday remand court.

The court worker’s main duties include:

  • providing advice to Sheriffs, the Procurator Fiscal, Defence Agents, Sheriff Clerk, Offenders and their families on matters relating to the criminal justice system.
  • carrying out post-sentence interviews (for those who have been given a community sentence, as well as those remanded to custody).
  • providing written and verbal reports to the courts.
  • monitoring reports submitted to the courts.

In addition to the above, the court worker also carries out work within the bail service. The bail service aims to provide the court with an alternative to remanding an accused person to prison, in appropriate cases, by providing verified information to the courts. The courts then have responsibility for deciding whether or not an accused person should be granted bail.

The main types of bail services we provide are:

  • Bail Information Schemes
The aim is to provide independent, factual verified information to the courts about those held in police custody prior to a court appearance the following day.
  • Bail supervision
The aim is to identify and provide services for those who are on, or at risk of, a custodial sentence who, if subject to supervision, could be considered for bail. This could be before trial or before sentence.
