Visit Falkirk

The Falkirk area is rich in history, with connections dating back to the Romans around AD142 when the Antonine Wall was constructed.

It also saw the Battle of Falkirk in 1298 during the war for Scottish Independence and the Battle of Falkirk Muir in 1746 when Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites defeated government forces.

The baronial mansion, Callendar House, played host to many famous faces over the years including Mary Queen of Scots and Bonnie Prince Charlie.

The opening of the Carron Ironworks signalled the start of the industrial revolution in the area and a shift from agriculture to iron foundries.

Throughout the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the Falkirk area became a centre for cattle trysts in which thousands of people and cattle would descend on the area, benefiting the local economy.
