An online course aimed at managing personal finances – originally developed for Falkirk Council employees – has been made available to the public.

The Financial Capability online learning module was developed by the Council’s Debt Advice team as a trusted source of information and advice on personal finance.

Advice on savings, maximising income and reducing outgoings form part of the course’s content, collated by the Council’s debt advice professionals.

The module’s public release coincides with 'Blue Monday', so-called for supposedly being the most depressing day of the year – but a time of year when people are more conscious about their finances.

Staff from Falkirk Council's Debt Advice team worked with colleagues in the Learning and Development team to make the learning tool accessible to everyone.

The course includes a link to Falkirk Council’s benefits entitlement calculator, which assists people by showing what benefits they are entitled to.

Senior Debt Advice Officer Kenny Bowie said:

"We originally came up with the Financial Capability course to help Council staff who may be facing financial hardship, but we realised it may be of benefit to others, too.

"There’s a lot of useful information in the online course, particularly around budgeting and saving, maximising income and reducing outgoings.

"The content may be common sense to some, but there’s definitely nuggets of personal finance information useful for everyone in there.

"Of course, if people in the area would prefer talking face-to-face with a debt advice expert then you can speak to an advisor at any of our Hubs."
