People in Falkirk wishing to pay respects on Remembrance Sunday are being asked to do so from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under Protection Level 3 of the Scottish Government’s coronavirus protection measures, no outdoor events are currently permitted in local authority areas such as Falkirk.

On the doorsteps

With Falkirk traditionally having a strong turnout at Remembrance events, Provost William Buchanan is calling on locals to mark the two minute silence from their homes to prevent the potential spread of coronavirus.

The request follows the launch of a national campaign to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice from doorsteps across Scotland at 11:00am on Sunday 8 November.

Addressing the people of the Falkirk area, Provost William Buchanan said:

“In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Act of Remembrance will be different this year.

“For your own safety and the safety of others we must follow the Scottish Government Coronavirus Regulations.

“The Level 3 status of Falkirk means that no outdoor events are currently permitted, therefore we will not be holding the normal Remembrance event at the Cenotaph in Falkirk.  In place of the normal ceremony, I will attend alone and lay a wreath.

“Organisations wishing to pay respect to the fallen can do so by laying wreaths independently over the course of the day following social distancing guidelines, ensuring that no more than 6 people from 2 different households are present.

“We would encourage the public to mark the two minute silence at home at 11.00am on Sunday 8 November.”
